Types of Steel Pipes and Their Different Uses

Steel pipe is anywhere! Anywhere you turn or look, you will see some kind of structure or way of a conduit, that steel pipe is used for. And that’s not to mention that the pipe which is “out of sight, out of mind” that is serving its purpose under the ground.

Conventional or nominal pipe sizes are found on a pipe graph that is used throughout the business. If you don’t know anything about N.P.S., it is recommended that you have a look at the chart before buying any or doing some other projects together with the pipe. <–more!–>

There are essentially three distinct types of pipe, and they vary in the way that they were fabricated. There’s a seamless steel pipe that starts as a solid round and after being heated nearly to a melting stage, a hole is pierced through the center with a tool and creates the pipe. This is known as “Hot Finish Seamless Pipe”. The next and most popular variety called ERW or “Electric Resistance Welded” Pipe, starts as a reel or cut-to-width coil of steel, also called “Skelp”. The Skelp is invisible via a set of rollers that make it round and as the borders come together, an electric welder creates the longitudinal seam down the length of the pipe. The last and least used manufacturing procedure is “Buttweld” steel pipe. It’s basically the same procedure as the ERW pipe, except after being wrapped up, the borders are heated up and fused together to create the pipe. A bigger O.D. steel pipe can be made by rolling and welding parts of steel plate into cylinders or “Cans” and then welding them together end to end to make the pipe.

Steel pipe is anywhere. The pipe could be fabricated for several functions. Look at the Large O.D. Pipe used for billboard structures when traveling down almost any street. Just about any restaurant or place of business has an outdoor sign mounted on a pole made of steel. Look at each one of the galvanized pipes used for highway signs. That’s simply to name a few structural applications.

Besides each structural use, the pipe is used by the mile for potable water lines and drainage functions. Pipe used for “Casing Pipe” that’s hauled or dragged into the floor, to encase and protect utility lines beneath highways, railroads, lakes, and rivers. But the main use of new prime pipe merchandise is “Line Pipe” that is used in the oil and gas industry for the conveyance of merchandise from the rig into the refinery.

No matter if its reconditioned employed pipe that was taken up from the floor after being sporadical, the new excess pipe which was left from a mill or project rolling, mill deny pipe that has been downgraded because of abnormalities or neglected testing or a brand new sequential steel pipe merchandise complete with Mill Test Reports to MTR’S, there is a place or use for it in our world.
